Adipose Tissue as an Endocrine Organ
نویسندگان
چکیده
Adipose tissue is a complex, essential, and highly active metabolic and endocrine organ. Besides adipocytes, adipose tissue contains connective tissue matrix, nerve tissue, stromovascular cells, and immune cells. Together these components function as an integrated unit. Adipose tissue not only responds to afferent signals from traditional hormone systems and the central nervous system but also expresses and secretes factors with important endocrine functions. These factors include leptin, other cytokines, adiponectin, complement components, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, proteins of the renin-angiotensin system, and resistin. Adipose tissue is also a major site for metabolism of sex steroids and glucocorticoids. The important endocrine function of adipose tissue is emphasized by the adverse metabolic consequences of both adipose tissue excess and deficiency. A better understanding of the endocrine function of adipose tissue will likely lead to more rational therapy for these increasingly prevalent disorders. This review presents an overview of the endocrine functions of adipose tissue. (J Clin Endocrinol Metab 89: 2548–2556, 2004)

Effect of Thyrotoxicosis on Gene Expression of Hydrogen Sulfide-producing Enzymes in Epididymal Adipose Tissue of Male Rats
Introduction: Thyroid hormones are involved in the regulation of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) biosynthesis. The aim of this study is to determine effects of thyrotoxicosis on H2S levels and mRNA expression of cystathionine-β-synthase (CBS), cystathionine-γ-lyase (CSE) and 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase (3-MST) in the adipose tissue of rat. Materials and Methods: Male rats were divided into the ...

Introduction: Omentin, an adipokine, with anti-inflammatory effects reduces insulin resistance, and can hence, play an important role in prevention of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The present study aimed to investigate the association of plasma and dietary fatty acids with gene expression of omentin in visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissues. Materials and Methods: Visceral and subcut...

Adipose tissue plays a central role in regulating whole-body energy and glucose homeostasis through its subtle functions at both organ and systemic levels. On one hand, adipose tissue stores energy in the form of lipid and controls the lipid mobilization and distribution in the body. On the other hand, adipose tissue acts as an endocrine organ and produces numerous bioactive factors such as adi...
متن کاملIsolation of Adipose Tissue Stem Cells with Organ Culture Method
Background Isolation of adipose tissue mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) with current enzymatic methods has some limitations. For example, it is costly and time-consuming and results in a heterogeneous cell population that making compromise proliferation and differentiation of MSCs. Also, it is accompanied with the increased risk of culture contaminations because of several handling steps. In this...
متن کاملBiochemistry of adipose tissue: an endocrine organ
Adipose tissue is no longer considered to be an inert tissue that stores fat. This tissue is capable of expanding to accommodate increased lipids through hypertrophy of existing adipocytes and by initiating differentiation of pre-adipocytes. Adipose tissue metabolism exerts an impact on whole-body metabolism. As an endocrine organ, adipose tissue is responsible for the synthesis and secretion o...
